The E. coli W strain (ATCC 9637) is a microorganism isolated from soil around 1943 by Selman A. Waksman, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for the discovery of the antibiotic streptomycin. This strain was referred to as "Waksman's strain" or "W strain" due to its significantly higher sensitivity to streptomycin compared to other isolated E. coli strains. The E. coli W strain possesses industrially valuable characteristics, such as rapid growth, making it useful for the production of various bio-products through metabolic engineering. Notably, among the well-known safe E. coli strains (K-12, B, C, W & Crooks), it is the only strain capable of utilizing sucrose, a very inexpensive carbon source. Researchers from the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB), KAIST, and the University of Queensland in Australia have sequenced the genome of the E. coli W strain, which consists of two plasmids (pRK1, pRK2) and a chromosome, using Roche/454 pyrosequencing and Sanger sequencing methods. We published their findings, including the genome sequence and annotation results, and performed an in silico genome-scale reconstruction (GSR) based on these annotations (GenBank accessions: CP002185-7, PMID: 21208457).
