The biological data in the K-BDS can be classified into six major groups according to data types. For each of these groups and some of their subgroups as well, a separate repository website exists as follows.

For each of the data types, a specialized data submission format has been setup by taking into account of official or de facto standard data formats used by leading repositories of respective data types to ensure data reusability and compatibility. On the other hand, submission of BioProject information, which is a collective metadata on a biological research project, is mandatory for all the data types, which helps to provide an integrative and uniform access to diverse data types and to tie them together. Submission of BioSample information, which is a collective metadata on biological source materials used in experimental assays, is also mandatory for some of the data types, which further helps to integrate heterogeneous datasets.
The ultimate goal of the K-BDS is to establish and promote a centralized data archival practice and support data science throughout the world. To this end, each of the K-BDS sites collaborates with major data consortiums in the world, such as International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC) for KRA and KNA, ProteomeXchange Consortium for KPOP, a number of metabolome data repositories (MassIVE, MoNA, MetaboBank) for KMAP, and LONI (Laboratory of NeuroImaging) for KBI.
Sharing data is more useful when others can easily find, access, interpret, and reuse the data. To maximize the benefit of sharing data, the K-BDS is dedicated to expand and offer a series of data resources and services to benefit a wide range of research initiatives in biology.
